Rationale

The Centre for the Study of Àngel Planells and the Hispanic Avant-garde wants to promote and study the life and work of Catalan painter and poet Àngel Planells and make him known to an international audience. It also wants to collect his very scattered work in a virtual platform that is informative, accurate, professional and easy to navigate. It is expected that further images and texts by Planells will be added to the website over the years. Likewise, relevant sections will be translated into Catalan and Spanish and Planells’ literary texts and essays will be translated into English. The blog will include my contributions and those by guest researchers who have a known expertise in the field of the Hispanic Avant-garde. All these contributions will refer to Planells in different ways, creating in this manner a rich archive of ideas.

The Centre is totally non-profit and any work undertaken is entirely voluntary and a direct result of my passion for Planells’ production. However, I have been fortunate to be able to count on development assistance with the website from Dr David Brett. This project is indebted to many people who I am unable to name here, but the work previously completed by the Fundació Àngel Planells and Josep Bota-Gibert, the first researcher to have worked on Planells, has been crucial.

I hope that this project excites the viewers, fosters dialogue and contributes substantially to recovering the figure of Àngel Planells as an essential figure of Catalan and Spanish Surrealism. The Centre for the Study of Àngel Planells and the Hispanic Avant-garde wants to be an engaging, dynamic and thriving cultural platform.
